Privacy Notice

The National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET) respects the privacy of its applicants, certificants and other visitors to its web site. To protect online privacy, NICET has implemented the following:

General Users. NICET does not collect any personal information from general users browsing its web site without your expressed permission. Only aggregate data -- such as the number of hits per page -- are collected involuntarily. Aggregate data are used for internal and marketing purposes only and do not provide any personally identifiable information.

NICET Applicants, Certificants and Other Authorized Customers. To gain access to “authorized users-only” resources and personalization features on www.nicet.org, applicants, certificants and other authorized users are asked to register and provide some information. This information is submitted voluntarily. Information may also be submitted to NICET through testing and certification applications, publication/merchandise orders, and subscriptions. Additionally, for some e-mails sent in HTML format by NICET to its applicants and certificants through its listservs and electronic newsletters, we will collect specific information regarding what the recipient does with that email. For those emails, NICET will monitor whether a recipient subsequently clicks through to links provided in the message. NICET only uses this information to enhance its products and distribution of those products to its members. This information is not sold or distributed in any other manner.

How Does NICET Use Data Collected?

NICET uses information voluntarily submitted by applicants, certificants and other customers in the following ways:

Customer Services and Products. NICET uses data collected to improve its own web content; to respond to visitors' interests, needs and preferences; and to develop new products and services.

Disclosures to Third Parties. On occasion, NICET may provide limited data to third parties for the purpose of unsolicited direct mail advertisements, promotions, and solicitations for third parties' products and services. This limited data includes names, preferred mailing addresses and email addresses, but does not include telephone numbers or fax numbers. Users may request that NICET refrain from disclosing the data it collects to third parties by contacting NICET at cert@nicet.org to express their preferences if they determine later that they do not wish to have the information shared.

Social Security Numbers. NICET previously required social security numbers from all certification applicants as a unique, national identification. NICET discontinued this requirement in February 2007; and now requires a government-issued, photo ID instead. NICET does not disclose social security information provided by its applicants and certificants to anyone.

Credit Card Account Information. NICET does not store nor disclose credit card account information provided by its applicants, certificants and customers. When applicants, certificants and customers choose to pay using their credit cards, NICET directly relays the information needed to obtain payment only to the appropriate clearinghouse.
